A heteronym is a word that is spelled the same as another word, but has a different pronunciation and meaning. To all outside appearances they are the same word, but a speaker of the language will immediately, instinctively, understand the difference.

These journal entries were written by me. They are not entirely fiction. Mostly they start with a thought or an experience that is mine, but then expand and deviate from it in a new direction. Think of them as the journal entries of people I could have been; perhaps people I am, in another universe somewhere.

For the last few years I've have a defensive mechanism, which is to believe that I have very little natural ability as a writer, and will never be able to produce anything publishable. This is largely to pre-empt the disappointment of trying and failing; I have other skills at which I am more likely to succeed, such as painting, or the writing and teaching of academia. Apart from essays, therefore, all my writing over the past few years has been of the personal kind. Notebooks, livejournal, essays, websites. It is a genre in which I am practised and comfortable. This journal is largely an attempt to start to comprehend fiction-writing by approaching it via this medium. These are fictional, but they are also journal entries, and therefore far easier to write than short stories or poems or novels.

I have no fixed intention for this journal. Perhaps it will remain a private writing exercise. Perhaps some of the personalities that emerge from these entries will catch my interest and demand further attention. Perhaps the journal as a whole will take on a form that could eventually be useable; a collection of anonymous personal essays, brief glimpses into non-existant lives. Or perhaps its purpose will be wholly introspective, serving to delineate my own (young, developing) personality by contrast with what it is not. I don't know. But it's going to be interesting finding out.
